Wales at the Forefront of UK Offshore Wind Turbine Projects

Onshore Wind Project at Calderdale Energy Park

With our offshore scaffolding and services company based on the North Wales coast, at the port of Mostyn in Flintshire, BGB Group Global are proud to be part of the exciting Welsh offshore wind industry.

Wales has been leading the way in offshore wind turbine projects in the UK from the very start. Here at BGB we’ve helped with a number of these schemes, providing expert offshore scaffolding and access solutions, along with a host of other services, such as wind turbine maintenance and inspections.

A Welsh success story

Welsh wind power goes back decades, with the 3.9sq mile North Hoyle wind turbine project one of the earliest in the UK, starting as far back as 2002. Today North Hoyle has a 60MW capacity, enough to power 40,000 households, and saves 160,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.

On the same stretch of coast, close to BGB’s international headquarters, the Rhyl Flats wind turbine project has been generating power since 2009. This 25-turbine wind farm has a 90MW capacity, enough for 70,000 homes.

Completing our three local wind turbine projects, the mighty 576MW Gwynt y Mor wind farm was commissioned in 2015 and boasts no less than 160 wind turbines. This generates enough electricity to power 467,000 homes and save 1.7 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

Welsh harbours bid for more

The Welsh prominence in offshore wind energy has continued recently, with three Welsh ports bidding for an exciting new floating wind turbine project in the Celtic Sea.

The ports of Milford Haven, Port Talbot and Swansea are in the running to develop the next generation of floating wind turbine project, with platforms the size of football pitches anchoring turbine towers almost 1000ft tall.

The project, developed in partnership with Crown Estates, is being seen as a ‘golden opportunity’ by Jo Stevens, Secretary of State for Wales, who added that “Wales will play a key part in delivering clean power.” Plaid Cymru Energy Spokesman, Llinos Medi described the floating wind turbine project as “an exciting step forward” for the nation.

From Wales to the world

BGB Group Global are delighted to have played our part in putting Wales on the map when it comes to renewable energy. We’re hugely proud of our Welsh heritage, but we didn’t stop there. Having made our name through wind turbine project work in Wales, we’ve stretched our wings worldwide.

Today BGB has bases in both Taichung City and Rhode Island, to serve offshore wind turbine projects in Taiwan and the United States. We’ve recently begun to expand into the Australian market too. BGB are present on every single US offshore wind turbine project, and all of the offshore wind turbine projects of Ørsted, the world’s largest wind energy developer.

We never forget our roots

Despite our global growth, here at BGB, we never forget our roots as a local Welsh scaffolding company. We still work hard to deliver first class, personal service to the highest standards of quality and safety on every job.

“We’re delighted to see Wales continue to be at the forefront of offshore wind turbine projects,” says BGB Founder and Managing Director, Ben Badham. “From our base in Mostyn Docks, we can see some of the world’s largest and most successful windfarms out in the Irish Sea and across Liverpool Bay. We’re proud to have played our part in making that happen.”
